Time for a Change

posted by constance

People change all the time. My helper has been with us for more than 5 years, coming to 6 years in June. Each year she gets to have her home leave. Last year, again she requested to go back for her festive celebration and we allowed her, for 3 weeks. But in the past year, her sms-ing while working or cooking is just driving me crazy. Can you imagine checking it during cooking or doing any chores?

Then in the past few months she gave me some other problems as well. She has too many matters/excuses and request for too many things. She has also lied about some things too. What I’m also cross about is that she also does not bother to wait for the school bus with my daughters but sits with a group of 7 other helpers chatting. A neighbour and my daughter says when the bus arrives, she is not even aware of it! I have not confronted many things with her but since she has also requested to go back for good so I am letting it happen.

I wonder if I should allow the new maid to come before she goes back for a proper handover or should I not do that. Some friends say it is better not to allow them to meet totally just for security purposes. I was also advised to install security cameras, or rather those little hidden cameras at home to make sure they don’t let people in when we are away at work. My neighbour did that after she found out that her maid has been letting some men into her house when the adults are at work and the kids in school! Oh how terrible!

Public Loos are Yucky (to me)

posted by constance

Call me anything you want but I try not to ‘patronize’ public loos if possible. I’m very well trained (LOL) and I can go without it for a good part of the day. Although Singapore has reasonably clean public toilets in malls, I still feel yucky about them.

Lately in recent years, many malls have nice swanky looking and beautifully fitted basins, bowls and misc. One of the most exclusive toilet I remember two decades ago is the one at Paragon.. At that time, it had auto doors and fitted with sofas in the adjoining make up room. Since then, other malls try to compete by doing their toilets up real nice. I heard that ION Orchard has exclusive ones reserved for VIPs. Even the local hawker centres have all started to create avant garde looking ones. They vary from local brands of fittings to American Standard toilets or some designer looking ones in some classy looking malls. However how beautiful or classy a toilet is, toilets have to be clean, dry with no stench or smell. That is most important. Users are the ones who make or break the toilets cleanliness. It is all part of our own responsibility on how we use it, don’t you think so.

Kids are So PC Savvy now

posted by constance

I saw so many laptops going at rock bottom price. The recent exhibition at Suntec was overwhelming, I heard! Can you imaging how they had to get ballot numbers because demand exceed supply. We went to Suntec when it was the last day of the exhibition because we heard that electronic items were really going to be really cheap on the last day but we just didn’t step into the exhibition hall, not even near. We browzed in Carrefour instead, buying shoes for Rae and Lea because they have outgrown their pairs much too quickly.

Can you imagine 42″ LCD going at only a little over $1k? Nope – we had no budget nor any need for that luxury. But I was salivating at those netbooks advertised in the papers. I think some of them were going at between $300 to $500 only. Those would be good for my eldest girl, for simple internet surfing, emailing and word processing projects for school. Kids nowadays are so IT savy. I wonder if in the near future, they will choose Jobs in IT since they have practically taken over my laptop, for most part of the day. Even my 5 year old can type nonsense-text as if she’s typing at 30 words per minute skill typist! I hid the laptop the last two days because they were on it for hours when I am at work.

Here and There

posted by constance

Time really flies! It’s only two days away from 2010. This year whizzed me by, especially the second half of the year. I cannot believe that it’s been 6 months since I started work either. I miss being a stay-at-home mom, actually but the tables cannot be turned around, not at this point of time. Perhaps soon if my business progress and I can afford to hire staff to take over. I miss bringing my kids out to the mall in the day. Now we only does it on my off day but most of the time, I am exhausted and want to sleep in. Most of all, I miss my girls. I miss chatting on msn and I miss having lunch because at work, it’s usually a rush meal.

Christmas was spent at work because it was a good weekend for business. And New Year will likely be the same. I didn’t do much decor at home for Christmas except put on the batteries for our electronic tree. My girls complained how boring it is now since it’s been the same tree for the last 3 years! Even the Santa, Sleigh and Reindeers mini figurines have all dropped off and nothing rotates around our tree..LOL

How did you spent your Christmas? Hope it was a blessed and happy day. It’s not over yet and New Year is around the corner.

Have a great X’mas and a wonderful New Year, everyone.

Forget That Weight-loss Supplement now

posted by constance

I am gloating about my weight. I feel lighter and healthier, really. Perhaps losing 6 kgs was a good thing after all. Some days I feel lazy but mostly I feel like going for a long walk and enjoy the nature breeze. I am able to put on my pre-pregnancy clothes. That gave me so much confidence, so much that i am not worried when it comes to buying clothings and shoes. I guess I don’t really have to give much excuse about wedding invitations as much and don’t mind dolling myself up for such dinners now. And I do wonder if I can put on those nice kebayas and not worried that the buttons might pop any time now.

Where are the calendars

posted by constance

It is that time of the year where you insurance agent visits you and reviews your insurance policy or policies you have. It is also the time where they work extra hard to meet their yearly objectives or sales budget. I know of many known and unknown agents who tries to give me some health insurance lead and they are generous with gifts like umbrellas, calendars and diaries. However, this year alone, I have yet to receive any calendar from my agent. The closest calendar I got was from a lady promoting the fresh local soya milk by giving out samples and wallet sized calendar (as a reminder of the agent). It is already coming to the mid of December and I don’t see anyone giving out calendars yet! Hrmmmph!

Integrated Resort coming up soon!

posted by constance

Next year is when every Singaporeans will be proud of two Integrated Resorts in Marina and another at Sentosa Island. Not to be outdone, both IRs will begin operating in the first quarter but in various stages. In it there are theme parks with games, rides, many food outlets and shopping too. I am quite sure that with such large projects, many jobs will be available not just the IRs but in other establishments as well.

Employers will be competing with each other for best salary and benefits too. I know few friends who have already quit their job and waiting to go into this new working location once it starts next year. Guess for those who have a knack for serious adult gaming, they don’t really need to plan for orlando vacations since the IRs will have everything in your fingertips! But I really still want to visit the Disneyland at Orlando.

Christmas Thumbdrive by Walls

posted by constance

Early this year, I remembered a special limited edition thumbdrive offered exclusively by Walls. These unique ice-cream-bar lookalike thumbdrive were only available in 7-11 stores and I drove looking around in several stores (many were sold out!) just so I could get it for a friend. They were really cute and two days ago, I saw that 7-11 was having another limited edition mini ice cream bar thumbdrive again. I stepped in to ask the sales girl to let me have a look at it. I liked the little Christmas hat (since it was a Christmas thumbdrive collection) but the little Magnum bars didn’t look as attractive as the previous one did. Perhaps because it was in darker brown instead? Although 4 GB ones seemed more attractive (compared with the previous one of only 2 GBs), I think I might just check out that Promotional jump drive offered online instead. Nowadays, all sorts of external disks are getting cheaper and cheaper each day. And with so many Tech fairs, I think I will be spoilt for choice before Christmas comes in two more weeks.

Netbook or Smartphone?

posted by constance

I have been too busy lately I don’t get to go online as often. And because I do not own any mobile that is wifi enabled, I wished I had my laptop with me. I used to bring my little porcelain ibook but now that it’s reached the end of the lifespan, I only have my ASUS laptop but I find it a little too big to cart or place in my drawer. I remember that a year ago, netbooks were quite popular for many who just want to do simple tasks like emailing and internet surfing.. Now that the price of these mini laptops are so low, I do wonder if I should get one at all. I am also considering a Nokia E72 but I am not too sure if it’s any better than a Blackberry, or a Samsung or how about Sony Ericsson? Something that I can get online or do some chatting on MSN or FB? Any great ideas?
