Alumni Meet Up

posted by constance

My ex class mates are arranging for a gathering end of the year. These are the mates I studied with after tertiary. Fine art students who are wild and crazy and temperamentalists! I remember how we would stay back after class ends almost every other day hanging out at PS in Orchard. How the guys love to sing and strut their guitar. We were all poor artists who spend our savings on art materials that we would share 5 large fries as meals. Those were the days.

Just the other day when I was at PS, I bumped into one of them. He was at the guitar shop, shopping for a rickenbacker pickup or whatever that was. He saw me and waved frantically to me from inside. That was when he decided that we should all have that Gathering. I agreed and said to keep in touch. Exchanged our facebook and whatsapp accounts and went on our way. Oh yes, we had no facebook and mobiles in our old school academy then… how convenient now!

Gardening

posted by constance

I’ve always loved gardening. It’s in my blood. I hardly have time to do much now but I still keep some plants, mostly edible ones now. I have a small pot of Daun Kaduk, which is also called Wild Betel Leaves, if I remember correctly. Some people call it pepper leaves. Not sure which is a common name. We use it for our Penang Otah Otah and Perut ikan. It is a nice mildly aromatic leaf, soft and just yummy when cooked.

I can’t find this plant in the markets in Singapore so growing them is the best choice. I also have a small potted plant of rosemary, given by a friend. And I planted some mint from cuttings leftover from the ones I bought from the local wet market. Last year, I also bought a small pot of curry plant and last month I got a small rooted stem of ‘bitter grass’ plant which works wonders for those with throat ailments.

If I had more space, and time, God knows what I will have! Veg, more plants and fruits!

For now, these little pots are my pride and joy and my endless stress reliever.

It’s a Hot Christmas Season

posted by constance

I envy countries that have seasons. Singapore is always hot. Or just cool because of rain. Yes it gets cold but that is when you are in the air conditioned room. I wished we have snow or even a nice chilly weather that is lower than 20 deg C. Fat chance, unless it’s magical. Sometimes when I browze into online travel reads, I would check their weather forecast. Yesterday, I checked some province in China – Shandong and further up nearer to Russia. Nice and light snow now.

The closest we had to something falling from our skies would be ‘hailstones’… hahahah yes. Two years ago when it was shrouded with thick horrid haze from the burning agricultural lands in Indonesia, we had hailstones for the first time in my whole life..

We have rain, of course… some months more some months none at all. We get plenty of artificial snow during Christmas period, with the malls spending money to churn out machine made snow to draw the attention of the customers.

Oh well, I can still go online and read about Cozy Winters Review if I can’t have a nice winter here in Singapore.

And copy all the nice and beautiful scenic spots on my wallpaper. Just pretend we have snow… Maybe I shall buy some nice thick cardigans and winter woolies and turn up the aircon the the lowest..18 deg…yes its only 18 deg the lowest we can have.

Oh maybe I should just eat some ice cream…

2015 posts..

posted by constance

I know I have really NOT been blogging. I want to, really but sometimes I am just too lazy. I have gotten past the blogging thingy actually, not like 8-10 yrs ago where it was still interesting to blog every or every other day. I am thinking of handling this over to my daughter who is a good 15 years old already! Time certainly flies. I was blogging a lot when she was so very young then. I enjoyed all the little stories about my girls and all the things we did then. Now because of work commitments and so much to juggle, blogging has been the last priority unless I really have some time to spare after some rest time which is rare for me.

I knew I had to get back here some time because I had an email that got someone asking me if I am still writing anything for money. Well, for the money I would, actually but it’s not really a lot as last time because I dont have so much spare time.

But I am just thinking perhaps this can be the new generation transition blog when it is then passed on to my daughter. And if it goes on, it would be really interesting to watch how a mom’s life and thereafter the new interesting active lifestyle of the offspring!

She has grown and matured a lot and is already a blogger in her own blog. But I am sure she would be happy to take this off me and continue on. After all, this is a paid for domain, I pay for hosting and also my yearly domain costs. Not a free blog. Let’s see how it will be for the future. Perhaps it will be a mom and daughter blog first…

Spring Cleaning Week

posted by constance

Yes, I’m down to doing spring cleaning now. I need to. It’s because if I don’t, I don’t have many days off before the start of 2015. Yup. One day a week off is never enough. Because there will be some off days when my day is packed with stuffs to do. Or daily chore is already up to the neck. So I better get started on those areas that need attention once a year thing.

I got down to dusting my book shelves first. I threw out lots of books/magazines because I don’t want to hoard, anymore. I’m a hoarder but not as bad as those you see on tv. OH those tv shows are so extreme but it woke me up… hahahha

I am still thinking if I should clear away my music books.. my guitar and piano books. I have given my guitar to a friend. If I had kept it, it would be just kept in a cupboard like a White Elephant. I have no closed area to put it with a guitar humidifier to keep it damp free, especially in tropical countries where humidity is very high. But sometimes I have urges to strum and play. Maybe when I get more space, I will start shopping for another guitar.

Wall art, Street art

posted by constance

This is not old nor is it that new. Wall art is something that is similar to painting except that they are done on a wall, not on canvas. In Penang, you can find numerous wall art, which are incidently street art, meaning they are illustrated on walls along the streets in Penang George Town. On my last trip back home, I visited these places as they weren’t there when I was younger and growing up in Penang. But because of the extent of tourists/visitor acknowledgement in Penang being a UNESCO Heritage island, I can’t help but, like all tourists, went to have a look. Interesting and very very creative.

Except that. How I wish the paintings or illustrations were done by local painters. They were the works of foreigners, mostly. It would have been a wonderful thing if the state minister would also set aside of an area, closed to traffic so that we and the tourists could enjoy taking pics without worrying about cars or bikes that could endanger visitors who were so engrossed into getting good pics of the walls for their family, friends and children.

In Singapore there is this thing called, Alive Museum. I saw some photos from friends, and these are similar concepts of paintings done and you can take photos and proactively pose as if you are part of the photos/illustrations on the walls. Its very interesting and that was what got me to think how great if Penang could have something like that, in a more local context in a ‘housed’ location with a nice mix of souvenirs, cafes, street food, and shopping as well.

What say you.

A Musical X’mas

posted by constance

I can’t believe how fast time flies. It is now October and pretty soon the end of the year means there’s gonna be lots of concerts to attends and lovely sounds of choir and carolling popping up in the malls too. Well, it has always been a lovely musical Christmas each year-end and I know a group of young teens who are jamming every day in the afternoon trying to get really for an awesome guitar performance and cool singing too. Not to forget, I need to make a trip to the GC, or our local music store to pick up some new music books for the kids at the care centre. It would be a nice early Christmas present for them as I’ve seen how used and torn their music books are.

Nostalgic Home

posted by constance

I had the chance for a short trip back home Penang last month. It was during the school holidays and our business was closed for two days for spring cleaning. So we took another few more days and made a trip home. The kids were excited. I didn’t have enough time to meet up with friends because it was too short and we flew home instead of driving back this time. Without our car, we felt handicapped and not that eager to go visiting and nor do we want to trouble friends to pick us up either. We tried the public bus that I had not boarded for the last 2 and a half decade! I think its a great achievement Penang has now. Not only is it convenient, it is also a comfy ride to George Town and we were like tourists in our own homeland!

Due to the common heat wave Penang usually has, we hardly spent our time outdoors, mainly stayed in shopping centres a stone’s throw away! Watched a movie and just bond with family members. Was supposed to meet up with a friend but due to my daughter having a weak tummy, we took a safer approach and stayed home or close to the malls’ lavatory…lol

Will post some pic or two when I am a little more hardworking….

Korean or Chinese

posted by constance

I came across several people who dons the Korean clothes during the Chinese New Year recently. Do Koreans celebrate Chinese New Year as the Chinese do? Sometimes I get confused. i know Vietnamese observes Chinese New Year and the same calendar as the Chinese but what about the Koreans. Do they have a separate Korean New Year?

There are many Koreans near the place where I live and I am lucky to be able to enjoy their yummy and delicious food. There are also pretty Korean clothes in the boutique and my daughter loves their culture so much. She enjoys watching K-Pop entertainment and the show called the Adventures of Superman.

Korea has really progressed by more than a leap throughout the past decade from cars to mobiles and cosmetics and entertainment scene. Are you a Korean-culture fan too?

Happy New Year

posted by constance

How time flies! 2014 appear at the blink of the eye… to me. I can’t believe it. Years have just whizzed me by. Will it be a good year? I certainly hope so. I wish for simple things, humble stuff. A blessed year, safety and good health. What about you? How had 2013 been for you? It’s been a roller coaster ride for me and not a very good year end either. But I am being positive now and hopefully things will look up.

Have not been baking for more than half a year. No more oven. Need to get one, albeit a tiny one. Even cupcakes are good. I have baking urges in the night… sigh. Chinese New Year is also around the corner. Anyone done with spring cleaning yet? Lazy me. Always at work, not sure if it will be done… never mind. Just like my resolution, Blessings, Safety, Health. This is 2014. This is for my humble self. Nothing more than that. My wish for myself, my family and for you.

Have a Blessed One!
